Study Skills - First Year Students

In common with many institutions, NUIG offers a range of supports and training opportunities to first year undergraduate students supporting their transition into higher education. These cover key study skills topics such as effective note-making, refining critical thinking and problem solving skills, groupwork and presentation skills.

A set of clear criteria are specified for each of these topics for which students have to demonstrate their attainment in order to be awarded a digital badge. The badge is a signfier that they have completed such training and hold skills to the level stated. In this particular example, the student must work through online lessons provided through Palgrave-Macmillans programme to which the university subscribes and which are accessible through the Blackboard VLE.  However, any similar training can use the criteria/rubric and if it meets the requirements, the badge can be issued.
