Cell EXPLORERS is a science education and outreach programme based in the School of Natural Sciences in the National University of Ireland Galway. Staff and students are involved in science outreach activities, either on a voluntary basis or as part of their degree (in cases where science outreach is embedded in the curriculum).
These volunteers demonstrate at school visits, festival workshops and open days, bringing their love of science to children, their parents and the general public. To recognise the participation and specific skills gained by these volunteers, a series of 6 badges were developed, covering areas such as ‘demonstrator, ‘leader’ and ‘achiever’. All badges have a clearly defined set of criteria, covering the number of hours required in earning the badge, the specific activities the volunteers were involved in and the skills gained in earning the badge.
The first set of Cell Explorer badges are due to be issued at the end of Semester 2, 2016.
